As the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence comes to a close, I reflect on how far we have come as a community. It is estimated that 1 in 3 women have experienced violence in their lifetime. Violence is not only physical force but also sexual and psychological.
In 2016 I attended South Africa’s dirty laundry, a stirring exhibition by Ndumiso Msimanga and Jenny Nijenhuis. The exhibition aired the country’s dirty laundry for all to see – 3600 used underwear to represent the 3600 sexual offences that occurred daily in the country. Although this statistic is unverified – it is still deeply startling. We have a long way to go to eliminate gender-based violence. We all have a part to play to achieve this goal.
