Climate change and HIV/AIDS represent two of the greatest threats to human health in the 21st century. Climate change affects everyone in the world. However, the impact is greatest in regions already facing other challenges, with vulnerable groups of people, including people living with HIV, the most affected. This 10 second video explores how climate change affects the fight against HIV & AIDS.
Although HIV infections have been reduced by 54% since the peak in 1996, new HIV infections are rising in an alarming number of countries, regions and cities around the world. In 2021, around 1.5 million [1.1 million–2.0 million] people were newly infected with HIV, compared to 3.2 million [2.4 million–4.3 million] people in 1996. Women and girls accounted for 49% of all new infections in 2021. This 10 second video lists the countries with highest estimated share of worldwide new HIV infections in 2021.
