The first woman president of Namibia, Nandi-Ndaitwah, has appointed eight women as heads of ministries (of which there are 14 positions).

We love to see it! However, a majority women lead cabinet doesn’t necessarily guarantee change. That said, having more women leaders in government is important for several reasons:

  1. Diverse Perspectives: Women bring unique life experiences and perspectives, which can lead to more inclusive and comprehensive policy-making. Their input can help address issues that may not always be prioritised in male-dominated leadership, such as women’s health, family support, and gender equality.
  2. Equality and Representation: Women represent about half of the population in most societies. For democracy and fairness to truly thrive, leadership should reflect the diversity of the people it serves. When women are in leadership roles, it helps ensure that the concerns and needs of women are better represented.
  3. Role Models: Female leaders serve as role models, inspiring future generations of women to engage in politics and leadership. This can help break down societal stereotypes and encourage young girls to aspire to positions of influence.
  4. Improved Decision-Making: Studies have shown that more diverse leadership teams tend to make better decisions, as they consider a wider range of ideas and experiences. Women leaders contribute to that diversity, making decisions that are more balanced and equitable.
  5. Social Justice: Women’s leadership is often tied to promoting social justice, human rights, and environmental sustainability. Having women in government can push for policies that aim to reduce inequality and improve social welfare.
  6. Global Impact: Countries with women in high positions of power often have more progressive and peaceful foreign policies, with some focusing on diplomacy, human rights, and international collaboration. Female leaders can bring a cooperative approach to global issues like climate change, conflict resolution, and healthcare.
