Queen Pokou, or Awura, Aura, or Abla Pokou (reigned c. 1750 – c. 1760) was queen and founder of the Baoule ethnic group in West Africa, now Ivory Coast. She ruled over a branch of the powerful Ashanti Empire as it expanded westward. A subgroup of the Akan people, the Baoule people are today one of the largest ethnic groups in modern Ivory Coast.
Queen Pokou was born princess of Kumasi, Ghana, daughter of Nyakou Kosiamoa, sister of Dakon, the ill-fated successor of Opoku Ware I, and niece of Osei Kofi Tutu I, a formidable king who was the co-founder of the Ashanti Empire.
Queen Pokou stands as one of West Africa’s most revered and resilient female leaders. When internal strife tore through the royal family, Pokou led a breakaway group westward, determined to create a new beginning.

Her journey was marked by hardship, but none as harrowing as the crossing of the mighty Komoé River. According to oral tradition, when her people could not find a way across, the river spirits demanded a sacrifice. In an act of ultimate leadership and selflessness, Pokou offered her only son to the waters. The river calmed, and her people crossed safely. In mourning, she is said to have uttered, “Ba ouli”—“The child is dead”—from which the name Baoulé, her people, is derived.
Queen Pokou’s legacy is profound. She is not only remembered as the founder of the Baoulé people of Côte d’Ivoire but also as a symbol of feminine strength, sacrifice, and nation-building. In a world that often sidelines women’s contributions to history, Pokou’s story reminds us that African queens did not just inherit power—they shaped the future.
Her courage echoes through generations of African women who continue to lead, resist, and rebuild.
